🧠 What the heck is a Second Brain

Your professional success and quality of life directly depend on your ability to manage the information around you

So here are the pain points 🎯

  1. How many times have you struggled to remember an important point from an article or book you read recently?

  2. Have you ever wasted time looking for a file that you thought you had saved?

  3. How many times have you forgotten a great idea you stumbled on while doing other random stuff?

  4. How many times have you forgotten an important piece of information given to you by your boss so helplessly because of the many other deliverables lined up on your desk at work 😫?

If you’ve ever found yourself in such situations, you are not alone. Millions of people across the world are struggling with Information Overload in our modern society.

Information overload is overwhelming because it taxes your mental resources, leaves you anxious; you begin to struggle to come up with new & great stuff, and you begin to helplessly react rather than being at the fore front of your journey.

This is where the concept of Building a Second Brain comes in.

A Second (or Digital) Brain is similar to an external hard drive. It's an external system that helps you capture, organize, retrieve and archive ideas, thoughts, or literally anything that comes to mind or appears relevant to your creative endeavors.

So the act of building a Second Brain is intentionally having to delegate and relive your brain from doing all of the things highlighted above, so as to focus on very high level and things crucial at the immediate.

🙄 Why Do I need a Second Brain

Your human brain is very functional but quite limited; so it does make sense that having two brains is an optimal action.

Building a Second Brain allows you to bridge the gap between your ability to learn and remember as it helps you

  • Learn and store information effectively

  • Recall information faster when required

  • Organize information to reveal connections and patterns in your thought process.

Major reasons that stood out for me since I started working on my second brain includes the following

Utilize mental resources effectively:

The mind is a very precious tool; you can't afford to use it aimlessly. The brain is a buffer and not a storage system; there are very complex decisions or tasks to work on; this is where the brain excels the most, not to be clogged with nagging sets of data in our mind.

The second brain helps me deal with all of those distractions, while I use my mind & brain judiciously.

Staying Balanced & Organized

In a world of endless ocean of information, if you truly are a craftsman, you will constantly feel overwhelmed by the amount of information you're expected to gulp in order to become a veteran at your craft.

The leads to me being Disorganized, --> then this leads to mental & emotional Stress, --> then that leads to Agitation, --> then to a Bad life full of bitterness, literally folks.

My second brain was the game changer; it takes time to get it up to standard to be honest, but at the barest minimum, I started enjoying these values.

Improves ability to Connect Ideas and Uncover new discovery

The more my knowledge base gets wider, the more I was and still am able to get deeper in my imaginative thinking.

Just as training a machine learning model works, with more cleaned and organized data, we're able to uncover new patterns and spot opportunities right before any other.

There are lots more, but I believe you already get it!

🤷‍♂️ How do I Build a Second Brain

No need to fret about getting started because I need you to really get started. There are only 3 things you'll need to do.

  1. Record - store information as much

  2. Organize - arrange in logical order

  3. Recall - retrieve when needed

That's it.

Before You Record, Decide What Information Matters to You

Be intentional about managing and actively choosing what information gets to you, from YouTube videos, to podcasts, email, and tweets.. Try as much as possible to make your digital circle surrounded by data tunnels channeling only things of value to your doorstep.

🏘️ Choose a Digital Tool to house your Second Brain

There are many tools out there for this purpose. I personally started out with Notion, which I enjoyed, then I tried using Evernote and I loved it. I currently use a paid version of Evernote which is quite affordable if you're really serious with it. I've got everything in there...
