Starting, again

Why I'm writing in public, what you'll find here, and the idea behind this container.

By Damilola Alagbala2 min readUpdated

I've started this more times than I'd like to admit. Each time, I got lost choosing a framework, a theme, a font — everything except the writing. This time I tried to do the opposite: build the smallest thing that could hold words well, and then get out of the way.

Why write in public

Writing is how I find out what I actually think. A half-formed idea feels complete in my head; on the page, the gaps show. Publishing adds one more constraint — someone might read this — which is usually enough to make me finish the thought.

The act of writing is the act of discovering what you believe.

There's a second reason, too. Most of what I've learned came from people who took the time to write things down. This is a small way of returning the favour.

One place

There is also something appealing about having one place for the work.

Over time, my work has found its way into different places — Substack, YouTube, social media, and wherever else a particular kind of work happened to fit. Those platforms are useful, but I don’t particularly like the idea of my work being scattered across a collection of places I don’t control.

So this is an attempt to bring it together.

The writing, the videos, the experiments, the things I’m learning, and the things I haven’t quite figured out yet — I’d like them to have one home.

Not necessarily one format, but one place.

What you'll find here

There are a few different places to wander into, for now:

  1. Craftsmen Journal — notes for people who make things — on craft, ownership, taste, and the slow work of getting good at what you build.

  2. Tech — thoughts from the work of building software: things I’m learning, things I’m figuring out, and lessons from the work.

  3. Faith — reflections on belief, Scripture, and practice — written honestly rather than neatly.

  4. Just Musings — notes on the things that catch my attention, occupy my thoughts, and might be useful to someone else.

I’m not trying to publish on a schedule or turn every thought into a lesson. Some things will be useful. Some will probably be obvious. Some may change my mind later.

That’s part of the point.

This is simply a place to put things into words — to think more carefully, to keep track of learnings, and, hopefully, to leave something behind that might be useful to someone else.

If you find something here that makes you think, teaches you something, or simply keeps you company for a few minutes, then the writing has done its job.

That's enough about the container. The next post will be about something that matters more. Thanks for reading.

  1. Fayve.

This resonates. The scattered work across platforms you don't control part is so real. Having one place you own changes how you think about the work itself. Anyway, I'm seated and ready for this.

I make things, think about things, and occasionally write them down — about life and the long, quiet work of becoming.
